WotW...not really.

Dakota Fanning and Tom CruiseWar of the Worlds. What a freaking pointless story. I was basically coerced to drive my mom and my brother a the movie I really did not care to see. Well I saw it anyway, and although it wasn't as horrible as I thought, it certainly left me pissed off for several reasons.

One, the story leaves nothing resolved and therefore pretty much pointless. There is no time for development, things just happen and in the end, there isn't even a wind down of events for you to actually feel anything come to a close. It leaves you in the middle of things. I feel that there is no way we would be underattack and then have our invaders randomly die on their own once we've hung on long enough for dear life. That just doesn't happen. Eventually, running and running will just lead to either dying or eventually something or someone getting caught and dying. If the invaders (aliens) planned this attack for millions of years (as the story suggests), you would think, considering their "intelligence" being superior to ours, that they would have done some resarch and tested the living conditions here before infultrating and dying in our atmosphere.

Secondly, it shows that Americans (since that's what they show in the movie) in despair are selfish, stupid and greedy. Well we all know this from several "end-of-the-world/crisis" movies (i.e. Titanic, Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure and The Day After Tomorrow) and "we're under attack" movies (i.e., Resident Evil, The Matrix, Independece Day, and Alien) .

Third, the stupid incorporation of Cruise's character in the movie is pointless. They could have picked anyone and they could have just stuck to the original story of having no real main character. But no, they pick the ever bankable and loony Scientology Tommy boy here. Oh and stick in a cliche disfunctional family plot crisis brings them together story and surprise-surprise! Instant Hollywood blockbuster!

Luckily we didn't pay to see it. The people just pissed me off. Cruise's character isn't likable. Just an irresponsible then suddenly martyr type dad in time of crisis. Dakota Fanning's character so full of crap you wish she died in the movie. Although I seriously give props to the actress herself for being able to portray that annoying character so well. Oh and there's Robbie, played by Justin Chatwin I. Now I actually like his character. They didn't play too much into the rebellious teen angsty role as much as I would have expected. His character was actually likable and reasonably rebellious. Though it pissed me off where they just had to have a scene like any other end of the world doomsday movie where one person urges the other to "go on" and leaves the other behind knowing they'll probably never see each other again. But wait, there's more, for those of you who haven't seen the movie and want to watch it, then stop reading. *Spoiler altert* Now if you're still reading this, then that means you could care less. But anyway, his character, upon separation with Cruise and Fanning actually lives. So in the end, there is no real tragedy or loss to any character. You never have time build a real relationship with any of the characters here, even Cruise. So in the end, you don't really feel a connection or attachment to anyone. Things happen far to quickly and things are left unresolved, though it is evident that Spielberg tried to put a little somthin' somthin' in there to aid the story along. All in all I the movie was entertaining enough to give it a 3 out of 5 stars. The special effects...rather, the cg was decent. That is, it wasn't so over-the-top that it wasn't believable. I also like the fact that they never say the word "alien". Of course it is implied that with the word "them" seems that people are afraid the aliens would attack even more if you said the word "alien" oooh like Voldemort....dun dun dun! On andwhat's with the blood guts. What the heck is that all about?
