When Bruins and Trojans unite
2006 is a big year for weddings on my calendar. There has been a wedding each month since march and I sill have another one coming in July.
Today was my closest friend's wedding. She is, of course, a bruin. Her now husband was a trojan. Now, although I have a healthy disliking for trojans for several reasons, this was the first time none of them tried to offend UCLA...hehe. I think it was primarily because there were a few bruin-trojan pairs in the place, so the rivalry was trite. One girl though, who went to Auburn and is now at Pepperdine for gradschool. Ah that was messy. She had no reason to pick at USC and fight, but well when it comes to being cocky, you can't beat the condom kids. Anyway, that aside, the wedding was really beautiful. The ceremony was held at Rancho Las Lomas in Silverado in Orange County. It looked like a Mediterranean villa spread out and etched in the hills with a bunch of exotic animals around (i.e.,white tigers, macaus, zebras, lamas, inus and who knows what else). The place was very beautiful and cute. Everything was built very small and so many layers, terraces, bridges, winding stairs, alcoves, fountains, pools and so many beautiful exotic flowers and roses. The Mediterranean style architecture was consisted throughout the "ranch" from the valet to the dining hall to the mini rest house/gazebo room areas and the open patio for the wedding. The pictures do not do the place justice, but I tried to take as many as I could without looking like a dork :P. I don't know if I achieved my goal o_O.
The weather was perfect, bright and sunny with a slight breeze--no could in sight. The people were, for the most part, all beautiful. It was kind of odd to see all beautiful people, but it made you feel good. Now, although they were all beautiful, that does not mean there weren't "Gotty" looking women there. I think there was a small group of five or so who had the Donatella Versace/Christina Aguilera look going for them with the bleach blonde hair with black roots and nasty tans and Prada/Gucci/Versace goggle like sunglasses, frosty lipstick and Miami beach Mardigras bangle jewelry and clothing.
Food. Now the wedding isn't a great wedding without good food. I know that the food was $150 per plate. I've never spent that much even for a group of five eating at a steak house. Still, for the service and the amount of hours hors d'oeuvres, it was okay. We had some lamb kabob/skewers (yummy), shrimp cocktails and chicken marinated in tomato basil stuffed in fillo (dude those were the bomb), and cherry tomato, olive, and gorgonzola cheese (good stuff) covered in pesto. This was eat your fill while we had an open bar and waited for the wedding party to take pictures. At the dining hall as we were seated, we were given spiced butter and dinner rolls, followed by a bread basket full of weird breads from onion bread to olive to seven herb, French bread and I don't even remember what else. There was a lot of bread to choose from. Then there was an open coffees/teas area with creme puffs covered in a honey sugar candy glaze, almond cookie type things coated with powdered sugar, white chocolate almonds, chocolate, and some kind of macaroon/cookie thing.
We started with a baby spinach salad with candied walnuts, sweet seedless grapes, feta and gorgonzola cheese, and a sweet vinaigrette dressing (easily the best salad I've ever had). Main dish, you had a choice of top sirloin steak with herb mashed potatoes asparagus and mixed grilled veggies or grilled chicken/pasta. I should have taken the chicken pasta T^T since the meat was pretty rare (note: the waiter just handed me the stuff so I didn't really want to be whiny and say no when my neighbor the Auburn girl went all "I don't eat red meat" on the waiter). So, in all the food was pretty nice. I wish we had a choice of what to eat though (i.e. choose on the RSVP). We were seated next to the groom's frat brother (USC) and his gf (UCLA), bride's high school friends (who ended up going to USC), and her Pepperdine classmates. So, we were a mix of high school, college and grad school friends. o_O. I just just glad I was sitting next to Cris...Who was very dashing btw ^^ *sigh*
After dinner and some tea, Cris and I danced with rail and her family. Her Godfather/sponsor or some significant person was basically throwing hundreds of dollars of $1 all over the place during the dances. It was like a cash money booth. While we were dancing, there were bills all over the floor being stepped on *__*. In our culture, there's usually a money dance, but not a money shower. Anywho, I'd really happy for rail. I know she's going to be freakishly exhausted when she gets home. As we were driving back from the party, I began thinking about what rail said that she'll end up getting her doctorate with a new last name. So now, I can no longer call her by her maiden name. Now she is no longer living in Redondo Beach at her parents' address. All of this, thinking of this, although I knew it and it was logical it would happen, just made me realize how much changes once you are married and what it means to everyone else involved. It made me a little sad. So, in the end, the last card I got from her was in response to a card I sent her before she went to Greece two weeks ago. That would be the last letter/card she gives to me with her maiden name on it :( it makes me sad. Kind of like I lost my chance to keep up with such a wonderful person. The thing is, she's always on the go and she touches so many lives. In the end, I suppose I'm very lucky to be one of the many or the few who have made an indelible, no matter how small, impression in her life. Her family is so nice to me and has always remembered me since they visited in college. In a way, it makes me feel a little better to know that I have the right to be there in the wedding regardless of what the others may be there for.
Well I'm tired and darn sleepy and I have a meeting early tomorrow so good night y'all -_- ZZzzzzz
