Freedom

Summer school is finally over and I'm officially done with my first year of grad school. Time flies indeed. With practicum looming ahead and nothing standing in my way in the next two months (aside from lack of money), I am at a loss as to what I should do. It seems that I prefer being stressed by being busy than being stressed and carefree.

I've never really had a real summer vacation in a long time. I always had summer school when I was in college and when I wasn't, I was working anyway. Now that I have nothing due, no more tests, no more presentations or projects or papers for the next two months, I feel restless. I keep thinking I could be doing something productive.

Today I decided to sort some of my stuff and go grocery shopping...kinda. I've exhausted my fresh food supply because of the craziness of the last three weeks. The director of our program is having a party at his house and I've decided to try and bring some panict over. I haven't had Filipino food in a while, so it would be nice to try and cook some and bring it as our last hurrah before I head back home to get away from LA. I tried to search for the nearest Asian food store in Culver City. The nearest 99 Ranch is in Gardena, and I would rather not head over there if you know what I mean and the other Filipino stores are in downtown LA or in Panorama. If I gas wasn't such a big issue, I wouldn't mind driving over, but with an SUV taking me there, I would prefer somewhere closer. So, after googling bit, I was lucky enough to discover an actual Filipino mini grocery store here in Culver City called Bahay Natin Food Mart. it's right next to the flower shop on the corner of Venice Blvd and Hughes Ave.

It's about 7 minutes away from my place. A small store, but it does have a variety of stuff. I found the ingredients I was looking for. It's actually walking distance from St. Augustine, the Sony Picture Studios, and down town Culver City. So that's convenient if I decide to go to church, watch a movie, or have dinner and then need some Pinoy food. It's nice to know there's a Filipino presence in Culver City despite being predominantly white upper middle class and some Hispanic populations. When I walked in the lady was kind of surprised I was asking for some stuff. I guess she didn't think I was Filipino. Anyway, I got my pancit stuff, but I need some wing bean and Chinese sausage. Maybe I could skip the Chinese sausage since a lot of my classmates are vegan anyway. But dude, it's not the same without meat in there!. Oh well, we'll see. I don't know how flavorful the panict will be without it. Man I wish my mom was here to help me.
